    INTRODUCTION: 96 skaters from 17 countries began practising for the World Figure Skating Championships in Tokyo on Thursday (24 February). The championships begin on 1 March and have attracted the world's best skaters.

    SYNOPSIS: The Shinagawa Rink in Tokyo was the scene of Thursday's practise sessions. First on the ice were the British pair, Janet Thompson and Warren Maxwell. In all 28 skaters will take part in the pairs event.

    The Soviet Union and the United States have the most competitors -- 26 each. The powerful Soviet team is headed by Irina Moiseva and Andrei Minenkov -- heavily favoured to win this year's ice dancing championship.

    Young Soviet singles skater Vladimir Kovalev is also expected to do well.

    The championships will be held over five days on the Yoyogi artificial rink in Tokyo.
