  • Description

Ghana's reconstituted National Family Planning Council was inaugurated by Mr J H Cobbinah, the Inspector General of Police and Commissioner for Internal Affairs, in a ceremony at State House in Accra on Thursday (4 October).

The original Council was set up after the country's first National Family Planning Programme was launched in May, 1970. But it operated for less than a year before the Thirteenth of January Revolution made it defunct.

Since then the Family Planning Programme has carried on without guidance from either the Council or its important Advisory Committees. By re-establishing the Council, the Government is filling an obvious gap in the Programme's operations.

The principal aim of the N.F.P.P. is to reduce Ghana's high rate of population growth, by offering couples the opportunity to voluntarily regulate the number of children they have.

Also present at the ceremony in State House were the Chinese Ambassador, and Mr Imoru Egala, the Chairman of the National Family Planning Council.

SYNOPSIS: Organisers and workers in Ghana's Family Planning Programme were among the audience to hear Mr J H Cobbinah, the Inspector General of Police and Commissioner for Internal Affairs, inaugurate the new National Family Planning Council on Thursday. The ceremony, held in The State House, in Accra, was also attended by the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana. The Chairman of the Council, Mr Imoru Egala, was also present. The original Council was set up when the Family Planning Programme was launched in May 1970, but it operated for less than a year.

That first Council ceased to function after the Thirteenth of January Revolution. The programme has since operated without the guidance of either the Council or its advisory committees. The new one will fill this gap in the Programme's operations.
