  • Description

Soviet Defence Minister D'mitri Ustinov has attacked the United States and other Western countries for planning to upgrade NATO's nuclear arsenal in Europe. In an address to troops, Marshal Ustinov said reactionary forces in the United States were trying to gain military superiority over the Warsaw pact alliance. His speech came on the sixty-second anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution, marked by a full-scale military parade in Moscow's Red Square.

SYNOPSIS: One face missing from the ranks of the Politburo members was Prime Minister Alexeo Kosygin, said to be resting by the Black Sea. But despite recent reports of his ill health, Soviet President Leonid Brezhnev, spent more than an hour standing at his vantage point on top of Lenin's tomb. He watched a massive parade of military manpower and hardware.

Sophisticated T-72 tanks were back on show after a year's absence, and other weaponry viewed by the President included several batteries of air-to-air missiles, self-propelled cannons and armoured personnel carriers. The biggest weapon on show was the surface-to-surface tactical nuclear missile known to NATO as Scud B.

Despite sub-zero temperatures, thousands of civilians gathered in the square to watch the parade. Once again, Mr. Brezhnev was given pride of a place in their portraits and banners.
