SYNOPSIS: In Lebanon, there have been celebrations by Palestinian commandos marking the El Fatah group's 12th anniversary of its declaration of hostilities against Israel. The celebrations included marches by Palestinian guerrillas, and, in Damur among those taking part were survivors of the siege of the Palestinian refugee camp of Tel-Al-Zaatar. The celebrations in other parts of Lebanon had been attended by the leader of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation, Yasser Arafat.
Carried in the marches were portraits of those who had died for the Palestinian cause. The Tel-Al-Zaatar camp saw some of the heaviest fighting of the 18-month old Lebanese Civil War. The Right-wing attackers suffered losses but the death toll among the refugees and Palestinian guerrillas in the camp were put at more than 2,200.
The celebrations were to last for a week, and were being conducted in several countries. Meanwhile the peace in Lebanon continues.
