  • Description

More than 100,000 people were warned to prepare for evacuation after a blizzard swept through Missouri and Nebraska in the United States on Thursday, (4 January).

High winds, accompanied by freezing rain and up to six inches (15 cms) of snow sent trees crashing into power lines, streets and building. 40,000 homes were left without power for heating. Damage was heavy but no casualties were reported.

Aircraft services out of Omaha Nebraska were halted and flights by the United States Strategic Air Command had to be cancelled.

Earlier in the morning Omaha's Loyal Hotel caught fire. One person died and four others were injured.
