  • Description

HUNDREDS OF WORKMEN, DIRECTED BY SOME OF THE MOST FAMOUS ARCHAEOLOGISTS IN GREECE, HAVE STARTED REPAIR WORK ON THE RAVAGES CAUSED BY TIME AND WEATHER ON THE ANCIENT MONUMENTS OF THE ACROPOLIS.

THE REPAIR PROGRAMME HAS RESULTED IN THE TOURIST ATTRACTIONS OF THE PARTHENON AND THE ACROPOLIS BEING SHUT BEHIND DRAPES AND SCAFFOLDING. BUT THE REPAIRS - MAINLY TO CRACKS IN THE STONE AND MARBLE OF THE ANCIENT BUILDINGS - SHOULD BE COMPLETED BY THE TIME THE TOURIST SEASON OPENS.

BUILT BETWEEN 447 AND 432 BC, THE PARTHENON IS FOREVER ASSOCIATED WITH PERICLES, THE STATESMAN WHO CONCEIVED THE IDEA OF BUILDING IT, AND PHIDIAS, ONE OF THE GREATEST SCULPTORS OF THE FIFTH CENTURY BC.

DEDICATED TO THE GODDESS ATHENA PARTHENOS, AND REGARDED AS THE FINEST TEMPLE OF THE GREEK DORIC ORDER, THE PARTHENON HAS SUFFERED OVER THE CENTURIES FROM HUMAN DESTRUCTION AS WELL AS DAMAGE FROM THE ELEMENTS. IN 1687 MUCH OF THE SPLENDID MASONRY WAS DISLODGED BY AN EXPLOSION WHEN THE TURKS WERE USING THE TEMPLE AS A STORING PLACE FOR AMMUNITION.
