  • Description

In France on Tuesday (14 September), a ground controller fumbled when sending radio signals from Paris to a French weather satellite -- and 72 research balloons committed mass suicide. The costly error literally blew a hole in the world meteorological service.

The French Space Research Centre said in Paris that the ground error caused the weather satellite "Eole" to transmit instructions to the high-altitude balloons floating near Africa and Australia to blow themselves up with their self-destruct equipment designed to operate only in emergencies if the balloons drifted near busy air routes.

But the research work goes on. 65 balloons survived the massacre and another 350 more are waiting to be launched from bases in Argentina.
