    THE 68-FOOT ITALIAN NAVAL ACADEMY YAWL CORSARIO II SATURDAY (27 JUNE) WAS UNOFFICIALLY DECLARED WINNER OF CLASS II, FOR FORE-AND-AFT RIGGED VESSELS OF 50 TONS OR MORE IN THE 3,600-MILE LISBON-TO-BERMUDA "TALL SHIPS" RACE.

    THE 74-FOOT BRITISH YAWL TAWAU, THE ONLY OTHER ENTRY IN THE CLASS, FAILED TO MEET THE FINISHING DEADLINE BECAUSE OF FAILING WINDS. THE CORSARIO II, UNDER THE COMMAND OF CAPTAIN UGO FOSCHINI, PASSED THE FINISHING LINE AT DAWN 26 JUNE TO BECOME THE FIRST YACHT OF THE FLEET TO CROSS THE FINISH LINE.

    AMONG OTHER EARLY FINISHERS WAS INDONESIA'S DEWARUTJI, WHICH IS ONE OF THE TALL SHIPS THAT WILL SAIL FROM BERMUDA TO NEW YORK FOR "OPERATION SAIL", WHICH WILL PLACE 24 VESSELS ON DISPLAY IN NEW YORK HARBOUR.
