Background: The Sultan of Brunei arrived in London today( Friday ) for important discussions on his country's future relationship with Britain.
Met at London airport by Lord Mowbray, representing the British Government, the Sultan is expected to have talks centring on the future of the Gurkha battalion in Brunei.
The last British Socialist Government had planned to withdraw the battalion from Brunei as part of the cutback in the British presence East of Suez. But under the present Conservative Government, the Gurkhas may now be retained.
The withdrawal proposal has been strongly resisted by the Brunei Government, which has even attempted to make arrangements with Nepal for the direct recruitment of Gurkhas for the State's own armed forces.
