  • Description

A TRY FIVE MINUTES FROM THE END CLINCHED A NINE POINTS TO SIX WIN FOR CAMBRIDGE AGAINST OXFORD IN THE 87TH UNIVERSITIES RUGBY UNION MATCH AT TWICKENHAM, NEAR LONDON, TODAY (TUESDAY). THE MATCH, ROBUST AND OCCASIONALLY ILL-TEMPERED, WAS WATCHED BY A CROWD OF 35,000
OXFORD FREQUENTLY WON THE BALL FROM THE SCRUMS AND LINE OUTS, AND WAS GIVEN OCCASIONAL CHANCES TO SCORE OVER CAMBRIDGE. BUT POOR HANDLING, FAULTY PASSING AND LACK OF PENETRATION AGAINST CAMBRIDGE COVERING WASTED MANY OPPORTUNITIES. ALL-BLACK SCRUM-HALF CHRIS LAIDLAW OF OXFORD FED A STREAM OF OPPORTUNITIES TO HIS TEAM, BUT THEY WERE ONLY OCCASIONALLY TAKEN UP. OXFORD FULL-BACK JIM WILSON MISSED SIX KICKS, AND THIS ALSO CONTRIBUTED TO THE TEAM'S NARROW DEFEAT IN THE MATCH.

CAMBRIDGE TOOK THE LEAD AFTER 13 MINUTES WHEN FLY-HALF ROGER SHACKLETON DROPPED A NEAT LEFT-FOOTED GOAL FROM 25 YARDS. THEY INCREASED THEIR ADVANTAGE 23 MINUTES LATER WITH A PENALTY GOAL BY SECOND ROW FORWARD MIKE MCKENZIE, WHO LANDED A KICK FROM ABOUT 40 YARDS.

OXFORD THREW ITSELF INTO THE ATTACK IN THE SECOND HALF AND HALVED THE DEFICIT WITHIN FIVE MINUTES. PETER DIXON, THE NUMBER EIGHT, SCORED A TRY AND WAS FOLLOWED BY AN EQUALISING TRY FROM PROP-FORWARD PETER JOHNSON. BUT CAMBRIDGE CAME BACK IN THE CLOSING MINUTES WHEN SHACKLETON SCORED THE WINNING TRY AFTER A FIVE-YARD SCRUM.
