Background: Goal-poaching striker Gerd Muller scored his second hat-trick in successive World Cup matches as West Germany trounced Peru 3-1 in Leon tonight (Wednesday). Both sides had already qualified for quarter final places, but the West German victory enabled the team to take the maximum number of points from their Group Four programme.

All the goals came during an exciting first half, in which both sides created early scoring chances. But the only man during this period to convert chances into goals was 24-year-old Muller -- who nearly missed the game because of a pulled muscle.

Muller scored one of the Cup's fastest hat-tricks. Three times between 20th and 38th minute dangerous German centres caught the Peruvian defence out of position. On each occasion, Muller was there to cash in on the defensive errors.

Peru managed to pull one goal back just before half time. Awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area, top scorer Teofilo Cubillas crashed the ball into the net off a member of the German defensive wall.

West Germany deliberately slowed the pace of the game in the second half. Peru still managed to create enough chances to snatch at least a draw but they were again unable to find a scoring touch.

As a result of tonight's game, Peru will have to face Brazil in the quarter finals. West Germany's opponents will be decided after the remaining Group Three game between England and Czechoslovakia.
