  • Description

India's Prime Ministers Nehru was given a warm welcome when he visited the UN-controlled Gaza strip, May 19, to talk to Indian troops in the United Nations Emergency Force and to inspect Arab refugee camps.

Coming from Cairo, where he was the first Indian Premier to pay an official visit to the United Arab Republic, Nehru was received by Lt.-Gen. Ahmed Salem, UAR military governor of Gaza, and UN Force Commander General Gyani.

As Nehru's UN aircraft touched down, two Israeli jets flew overhead along the shallow ditch forming the armistice demarcation line between Israel and Egypt. Lt.-Gen. Salem immediately claimed the planes had violated UAR air space. He said a protest would be lodged with the UN Truce Supervision Organisation.

Later, the Israelis issued a statement saying their fighters had merely been investigating an unidentified aircraft which had briefly overflown their territory. On discovering it was a UN aircraft they had "allowed it to proceed".
