  • Description

A hunger strike started by ten workers on July 22nd has grown into one of the biggest labour disturbances seen in New Delhi for many years.

The strike has been organised by the Delhi Provincial Municipal Workers Association and grew into a full scale "walk-out" when strikers held a peaceful demonstration outside the Parliament House on July 30.

But on the second day of the strike, when workers had gathered at the Municipal Depot close to the sweepers Harijan Colony, firing broke out and one worker was killed.

Another two men were taken to hospital with injuries and reports indicated that one of them was seriously hurt. In other parts of the Indian capital, the police charged groups of strikers and forced them back with their lathis (sticks).

Supporting their actions, the Police claimed that they had been stoned by the strikers who were also alleged to have intimidated sweepers recuited by the authorities to clear the streets. Strikers deny both these accusations.

Thousands of men were involved and the disturbances were scattered all over the city as word of the police actions spread from group to group.

The third day saw the strike return to normal. Strikers gathered in a park close to the Parliament House and squatted in protest against the police actions; the hunger strike group continued to camp under a sign which read, "Hunger Strike from July 22"; leaders addressed the men and encouraged them; and many women joined the strikers at their meetings and demonstrations.

It was the Harijan Colony that often housed Mahatma Ghandi during his visits to New Delhi.
