SOUTH VIETNAM'S PROVISIONAL NATIONAL ASSEMBLY HAS RULED THAT LAST MONTH'S ELECTIONS WERE VALID. BEFORE THE RESULT WAS ANNOUNCED LAST NIGHT (MONDAY) POLICE WERE KEPT BUSY DISPERSING STUDENT AND BUDDHIST DEMONSTRATORS WHO OPPOSE THE OUTCOME OF THE ELECTIONS IN WHICH LIEUTENANT-GENERAL NGUYEN VAN THIEU WAS ELECTED PRESIDENT. IN ONE INCIDENT TWO TELEVISION CAMERAMEN WERE INJURED DURING A SCUFFLE BETWEEN POLICE AND STUDENTS.

THE CLASH BETWEEN STUDENTS AND POLICE CAME WHEN 200 MEMBERS OF THE NATIONAL STUDENT'S ASSOCIATION MARCHED FROM THEIR HEADQUARTERS ABOUT A MILE FROM A BLOCKED OFF AREA OF SAIGON. HUNDREDS OF POLICE ARMED WITH CARBINES AND SUBMACHINE GUNS HAD SET UP BARRICADES IN THE CENTRE OF THE CITY.

THE POLICE RAN AT THE STUDENTS FROM BEHIND, AND MANAGED TO CATCH ABOUT 10, WHO WERE BEATEN WITH RUBBER TRUNCHEONS. THE TWO AMERICAN TELEVISION NEWSMEN WERE THOUGHT TO HAVE BEEN INJURED WHEN POLICE PUSHED THEM OUT OF THE WAY.

ELSEWHERE, MILITANT BUDDHIST LEADER THICH TRI QUANG CONTINUED HIS DAY-AND-NIGHT VIGIL OUTSIDE THE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE. THICH TRI QUANG BEGAN HIS SIT-IN ON THURSDAY, IN PROTEST AGAINST A GOVERNMENT DECREE RECOGNISING ANOTHER BUDDHIST FACTION AS THE LEGAL VOICE OF VIETNAMESE BUDDHISTS.

ABOUT 200 BUDDHIST MONKS AND NUNS CAME TO PAY THEIR RESPECTS TO THEIR LEADER DURING HIS FIVE-DAY VIGIL.

AFTER THE ASSEMBLY'S DECISION WAS ANNOUNCED POLICE BARRICADES IN THE CITY CENTRE WERE LIFTED, AND THE TRAFFIC WAS ALLOWED TO FLOW FREELY.
