  • Description

DOCTORS AT THE INSTITUTE FOR THE PROTECTION OF CHILDREN IN BELGRADE, YUGOSLAVIA, WILL SHORTLY ATTEMPT THE SEPARATION OF SIAMESE TWINS. THE TWINS, BORN IN THE VILLAGE OF DONJA BECINJA TWO WEEKS AGO, ARE JOINED BY THE THORAX AND ABDOMINAL CAVITY.

ILINKA JOVANOVIC, A FARMER'S WIFE, GAVE BIRTH TO THE TWO GIRLS ON JULY 12. THE GIRLS, NAMED MILKA AND MILICA, WERE TAKEN TO THE CHILDREN'S PROTECTION INSTITUTE IN BELGRADE FOR SPECIAL CARE SHORTLY AFTER THEY WERE BORN.

THIS FILM WAS TAKEN WHEN THE TWINS WERE FOUR DAYS OLD.

DR. IVO BASEVIC, HEAD OF THE SURGERY SECTION AT THE INSTITUTE, POINTED OUT THE DIFFICULTIES INVOLVED IN THE SEPARATION.

HIS EXAMINATION HAVE SHOWN THAT THE INTESTINES AND PROBABLY THE LIVER ARE JOINED. ALTHOUGH THE JOIN AT THE LIVER BRINGS NEW PROBLEMS, DR BASEVIC BELIEVERS THAT IT DOES NOT RULE OUT THE CHANCES OF A SUCCESSFUL OPERATION.

BUT HE WILL HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL EACH TWIN WEIGHS ABOUT 12 POUNDS (6 KILOS) BEFORE HE CAN OPERATE. HE EXPECTS THE TWINS TO REACH THE CORRECT WEIGHT WHEN THEY ARE ABOUT FIVE WEEKS OLD.
