  • Description

WITH ONLY EIGHT DAYS TO GO, IT NOW SEEMS CERTAIN THAT MARSEILLES, IN THE SOUTH OF FRANCE, WILL HAVE A "WHITE CHRISTMAS". SNOW, WHICH BEGAN FALLING LAST SUNDAY (DEC 15), HAS STEADILY INCREASED TILL NOW MOST PARTS ARE COVERED WITH UP TO TWO INCHES (5 CMS).

THE SNOW, COMBINED WITH ICY ROAD CONDITIONS, HAS DISRUPTED TRAFFIC; CAUSING LONG DELAYS FOR HUNDREDS OF CARS, BUSES AND LORRIES ON THE MAIN ROADS LINKING MARSEILLES WITH INLAND CENTRES. MANY ACCIDENTS HAVE BEEN REPORTED, BUT SO FAR ONLY INJURIES AND NO LOSS OF LIFE.

WORK IN THE PORT ITSELF ALSO HAS BEEN AFFECTED, AND THE LOCAL AIRPORT CLOSED FOR A TIME. BUT COMPLETELY UNCONCERNED BY THE MANY PROBLEMS PRESENTED, THE CHILDREN HAVE BROUGHT OUT THEIR SLEDGES TO CHEERFULLY WELCOME THE SNOW.
