Background: JAPAN HAS SET UP SHOP IN THE MERCANTILE HEART OF BRITAIN AND THE COMMONWEALTH - TO SELL SHIPS. HAVING DISPLACED BRITAIN AS THE WORLD'S LEADING SHIP BUILDING NATION, JAPAN NOW PLANS TO DOMINATE THE INTERNATIONAL MARKET, AND TODAY (TUESDAY) A JAPANESE SHIP BUILDING EXHIBITION WAS OPENED IN CENTRAL LONDON TO PUBLICIZE THE CLAIM THAT JAPAN CAN BUILD SHIPS FASTER, CHEAPER, AND AS WELL AS ANY YARD IN EUROPE.

ONE OF THE GIANTS OF THE SHIPPING WORLD IS ON SHOW AT THE EXHIBITION -- IN MODEL FORM. IT IS THE TOKYO MARU, THE WORLD'S LARGEST TANKER AFLOAT AT 151,000 TONS. IT WAS BUILT IN JANUARY BY ISHIKAWAJIMA-HARIMA HEAVY INDUSTRIES FOR TOKYO TANKER. AN EXTENSIVELY AUTOMATED TANKER, IT HAS A CREW OF ONLY 29. SOON THE TOKYO MARU WILL BE SUPERSEDED BY TWO OTHER JAPANESE-BUILT TANKERS.

ANOTHER MODEL SHOWS THE 132,000-TON TANKER, NISSHO MARU COMPLETED IN JULY 1962 BY SASEBO HEAVY INDUSTRIES FOR IDEMITSU KOSAN.

THE EXHIBITION IS IN OXFORD STREET, THE BUSIEST SHOPPING STREET IN LONDON.
