  • Description

Real Madrid - dominant in the European soccer Cup for five years - were beaten 2-1 by Barcelona and eliminated from the Cup in a second round, second-leg match at Barcelona's Miro stadium, Nov. 23.

Both teams gave all they had, at a terrific pace throughout. Real Madrid played champion football, but had three goals disallowed for offside, by English referee Reg Leafe. In the first half, Leafe was almost mobbed by Madrid players.

Although it looked like Real Madrid's game for most of the first half, Barcelona got it with a first lucky shot by Verges, when the ball was deflected from another player, after 34 minutes.

The second half brought relentless attacks by both sides. Deadlock was broken by Evaristo, who gave Barcelona their second goal with a corner from Kubala, eight minutes from the end.

Real Madrid hit back as hard as they could and broke through Barcelona's defence four minutes later. Canario scored - but there was no time for an equalizer.

Reports say that referee Leafe was attacked by Madrid supporters later the same day.
