    THIRTY-EIGHT SOVIET EMBASSY OFFICIALS AND FAMILY MEMBERS PAST THROUGH ROME YESTERDAY ON THEIR WAY BACK TO THE SOVIET UNION AFTER LEAVING ABIDJAN FOLLOWING THE SEVERING OF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH THE USSR. RELATIONS BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES WERE BROKEN OFF ON MAY 30 AND SOVIET OFFICIALS GIVEN 48 HOURS TO LEAVE ABIDJAN, BUT NO OFFICIAL EXPLANATION WAS FORTHCOMING FROM THE IVORY COAST GOVERNMENT.

    EARLIER, THE IVORY COAST AMBASSADOR IN MOSCOW WAS RECALLED, BUT AGAIN, THERE WAS NO OFFICIAL EXPLANATION FOR THE MOVE. THE SOVIET AMBASSADOR IN ABIDJAN HAS BEEN IN RUSSIA SINCE LAST APRIL AND A CHARGE HAS BEEN LOCKING AFTER HIS COUNTRY'S INTERESTS SINCE THEN.

    THE TWO COUNTRIES ESTABLISHED DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS IN 1967 AND THE SAME YEAR THE FIRST SOVIET AMBASSADOR PRESENTED HIS CREDENTIALS. THE FOLLOWING YEAR THE FIRST IVORY COAST DIPLOMATS WENT TO MOSCOW.
