A baseball team from Guam played the first of its best-of-three matches against Taiwan in Taipei on Saturday (5 August). The winner of the series is scheduled to represent the Far East in the 1972 Pony League world series playoffs in Gary, Indiana in the United States later this season.
A large crowd of fans turned out to watch the first match. Before the game got under way, the team listened to speeches from baseball officials and then exchanged gifts.
Baseball is one of Taiwan's most popular sports. The people picked up the skills quickly from Americans stationed on the island and over the last years have developed into some of the finest players in the world.
In the first game against Guan on Saturday, the Taiwan players demonstrated their fielding superiority ad their skill at the plate. They went on to beat the visitors by seven runs to nil.
