  • Description

THREE CONGOLESE GOVERNMENT MINISTERS ARRIVED IN KISANGANI IN THE EASTERN REGION OF CONGO-KINSHASA LAST WEEK, BRINGING WITH THEM ESSENTIAL SUPPLIES AND GIFTS FOR THIS CENTRE OF FIGHTING DURING THE MERCENARY REBELLION. THE MINISTERS -- MME. LIHAU, MINISTER OF SOCIAL AFFAIRS, M. ETIENNE TSHISEKEDI, MINISTER OF THE INTERIOR, AND M. LITHO, MINISTER OF FINANCE -- WERE IN THE REGION TO SEE THE EXTENT OF THE DAMAGE AT FIRST HAND.

THE MINISTERS LANDED IN A GIANT C-130 SUPPLIED BY THE AMERICAN AIRFORCE, TO BE GREETED BY REPRESENTATIVES OF THE LOCAL AUTHORITIES. CONDUCTED BY MR. DENGE, THE ACTING GOVERNOR AND PROVINCIAL COMMISSIONER, THE MINISTERS REVIEWED THE GUARD OF HONOUR BEFORE PROCEEDING TO KISANGANI.

THERE THEY WERE INVOLVED IN SEVERAL HOURS OF DISCUSSIONS WITH THE LOCAL AUTHORITIES TO DETERMINE THE SPECIFIC NEEDS OF THE AREA, AND HOW NORMAL CONDITIONS COULD BE RESTORED IN KISANGANI. DURING THE FIGHTING, THE COMMUNITY SUFFERED SEVERE LOSSES, AND LOOTING CONTINUED FOR SEVERAL DAYS AFTER THE FIGHTING.

DURING THEIR VISIT THEY TOURED THE INFAMOUS CAMP KETELE, SCENE OF ONE OF THE MOST SPECTACULAR ENGAGEMENTS OF THE FIGHTING. THEY MET SOLDIERS, VIEWED THE SCARS OF BATTLE, AND AN ASSORTMENT OF CAPTURED WEAPONS AND AMMUNITION.

MME. LIHAU STOPPED FOR A WHILE AT THE SOCIAL CENTRE TO SUPERVISE THE DISTRIBUTION OF SOME OF THE SUPPLIES CARRIED WITH THEM IN THE C-130. LATER THEY CROSSED TO THE OPPOSITE BANK OF THE RIVER TO COMPLETE THEIR PICTURE OF KISANGANI'S NEEDS.

THE FIGHTING STILL CONTINUES IN THE EASTERN CONGO. LATEST REPORTS SAY THAT WHITE MERCENARIES ARE ATTEMPTING TO BREAK THROUGH TO THE SANCTUARY OF LAKE KIVU ON THE RWANDA BORDER. GOVERNMENT FORCES NOW CONTROL PUNIA AND LUBUTU, TWO OF THE TOWNS OCCUPIED BY THE MERCENARIES AFTER THEY WITHDREW FROM KISANGANI. ACCORDING TO RADIO KINSHASA, THE REBEL FORCES ARE ADOPTING A 'SCORCHED EARTH' POLICY, DESTROYING ALL BRIDGES, SCHOOLS AND PLANTATIONS IN THEIR WAKE. THE RADIO SAYS MORE CONGOLESE SOLDIERS ARE BEING AIRLIFTED INTO THE AREA BY THE AMERICAN C-130 TRANSPORT PLANES IN A MOVE TO ENCIRCLE THE MERCENARIES.
