Federal Nigerian forces have retaken the city of Benin, capital of Nigeria's Mid West Region.

Benin, one of the most important cities outside the secessionist region of East Nigeria - now calling itself Biafra - was occupied by Biafran troops until Tuesday. The Biafrans had commanded the city since August.

Federal troops began advancing upon on Tuesday, and Biafran troops are reported to have begun a mass retreat towards the east. Most of Benin's civilian population are reported to have remained behind closed doors during the advance by Federal forces.

Shortly after the Federal advance was reported to have begun the Mid West region declared itself a republic - the Republic of Benin - saying it would cooperate with Biafra.

Federal forces later began shelling Benin, and after two hours into the city. Exchanges of fire were reported between Federal troops and retreating secessionist forces.

Nigerian Federal troops are now reported to have consolidated their position in Benin, although a number of explosions and incidents of looting and shooting were reported.

The situation in the Mid West region capital is said to have returned almost to normal.
