  • Description

TODAY 15,000,000 BLOOMS EACH YEAR SPRING FROM THE PLANTS AND BUSHES THAT COVER 27 ACRES UNDER GLASS AT THE DALE ESTATE LIMITED - NOW THE WORLD'S LARGEST PRODUCER OF CUT FLOWERS AND PLANTS, AND THE MAJOR SOURCE OF SUPPLIES FOR CANADA'S FLORISTS. THE ANNUAL CROP INCLUDES ROSES SNAPDRAGONS, ABOUT 100 VARIETIES OF CHRYSANTHEMUMS, CARNATIONS, TULIPS, DAFFODILS, LILIES, STEPHANOTIS AND GARDENIAS - TO NAME BUT A FEW. THE COMPANY'S GREENHOUSES ALSO HOUSE SOME 17,500 PLANTS PRODUCING 50,000 ORCHID BLOOMS OF MANY VARIETIES A YEAR - THEY ALSO IMPORT ABOUT 100,000 OF THESE FRAIL BLOOMS ANNUALLY.

THE COMPANY HAS JUST MOVED INTO A NEW HEADQUARTERS BUILDING SHOWN IN OUR FOOTAGE; THE ENTIRE SUPPLY DEPARTMENT, THE PACKING, GRADING AND FLOWER STORAGE DEPARTMENTS, SALES, BILLING, SHIPPING AS WELL AS RECEIVING, AND EXECUTIVE OFFICES ARE NOW HOUSED IN THIS SPARKLING 50,000 SQUARE FOOT BUILDING. THE ONE-STOREY BUILDING IS CONSTRUCTED ON A STRAIGHT-LINE PRINCIPLE SO THAT FLOWERS ARE RECEIVED FROM THE GREENHOUSES OR SUPPLIERS TO ONE END, COOLED, GRADED, PACKED AND THEN SHIPPED AT THE OTHER END - ALL IN A STRAIGHT LINE. THIS REDUCES HANDLING OF FLOWERS, AND THUS THE POSSIBILITY OF BRUISES; AND ENSURES INCREASED SPEED, LESS TIME AT ROOM TEMPERATURE OR OUT OF PRESERVATIVES, BETTER QUALITY ON ARRIVAL AT THE FLOWER SHOP AND ULTIMATELY THE CUSTOMER'S HOME. SUPPLIES ALSO MOVE ON THE SAME STRAIGHT-LINE PRINCIPLE.

BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT NEW DEVELOPMENT BROUGHT ABOUT THE NEW BUILDING IS THE INCREASED OF LIFE EXPECTANCY OF THE FLOWERS. THE MOMENT THEY ARE CUT, THE FLOWERS ARE IMMERSED IN WARM WATER CONTAINING CHEMICAL PRESERVATIVES AND THEN PLACED INTO A PREGRADE COOLER TO REDUCE TEMPERATURE FROM THE GREENHOUSE HIGH OF BETWEEN 70 AND 100 DEGREES (FAHRENHEIT) TO 35 DEGREES IN LESS THAN FOUR HOURS. THEN THE FLOWERS ARE GRADED AND PLACED IN HOLDING COOLERS OVERNIGHT. DURING THIS PERIOD ITEMS ARE ALLOWED TO HARDEN AND FILL WITH WATER AND CHEMICAL PRESERVATIVES, FURTHER EXTENDING THE ULTIMATE LIFE-SPAN OF THE FLOWERS. PREVIOUSLY, THEY WERE GRADED IMMEDIATELY. PREGRADE COOLING CUTS DOWN THE RATE OF DETERIORATION, WHICH IS EXTREMELY RAPID IMMEDIATELY AFTER CUTTING, ESPECIALLY IF FLOWERS ARE BEING HANDLED AT THAT TIME. ALL FLOWERS EXCEPT ORCHIDS, GARDENIAS AND STEPHANOTIS ARE SUBJECTED TO PREGRADE COOLING.

FOR THE PAST 70 YEARS, THIS CANADIAN COMPANY HAS REGULARLY BROUGHT HOME TO BRAMPTON INTERNATIONAL AND NATIONAL AWARDS FOR ROSES, MUMS, CARNATIONS AND ORCHIDS. THE TOWN OF BRAMPTON HAS LONG BEEN DESIGNATED THE FLOWER CENTRE OF CANADA.
