  • Description

In Californian shopping centre, Santa Claus has taken to closed circuit television to bring his Christmas message to children. The children go to a small house or grotto in the shopping centre to greet Santa Claus. What they see is a television screen. Santa Claus himself is in a nearby studio dispensing goodwill over the closed circuit.

Advocates of the TV Santa Claus claim that very small children are much less apprehensive of the image of the TV screen than they are of a white-bearded red-cloaked real-life Santa. And they say it boosts Santa's credibility. All children, they maintain, believe in television. In California they are happy to tell the image on the screen what they want for Christmas. And Santa Claus's beard is safe from the ministrations of precocious children.
