The new Pope, John Paul II, left the Vatican for the first time on Tuesday (17 october) and received a rapturous welcome form waiting crowds.

SYNOPSIS: Thousands of people cheered the former Polish cardinal as he was driven through the streets of Rome in the official Papal limousine.

The Pope's trip, to visit a sick Polish bishop, was a striking departure from tradition. For centuries it's been the custom for new popes to stay in the Vatican for the first few weeks after their election. But, apart from this public gesture, Pope John Paul has so far made no promises of dramatic changes in the Roman Catholic Church. At the Gemelli Hospital, he received an even greater welcome from the crowd, who broke through police barricades.

Giving his blessing, the Pope made his way to the tenth floor, where his friend, Monsignor Andrea Deskur, is recovering from thrombosis. Later, he told a crowd at the hospital that the warmth of the welcome was so great, he had feared he'd be hospitalised himself.

Earlier, Pope John Paul, the first non-Italian Pope for 450 years, said his policies would be those of moderate reform. To start with, he promised his bishops a grater say in the way the Catholic Church is run.

The new Pope also said he did not intend to involve himself in the Political himself in the political affairs of any country. But he made it clear that he would speak out against any injustice or infringement of liberty. John Paul also mentioned his hopes for peace in Lebanon, which, he said, had suffered from injustice or discrimination.

He denounced what he called "progressive Catholics", who had tried to introduce changes into Catholic Church services. Similarly, Pope John Paul came out strongly against what he called "the obstinate rejection of what has been legitimately prepared and introduced into the holy rites".
