  • Description

A MOUNTAIN RESCUE OPERATION IN THE ALPINE SNOWS CAN BE A DIFFICULT AND GRUELLING OPERATION. OFTEN RESCUE TEAMS HAVE HAD TO TRUDGE MILES OVER DIFFICULT AND DANGEROUS TERRAIN TO REACH AN INJURED MAN. AN EXPERIMENT IS BEING CARRIED OUT IN THE SAVOY ALPS THIS WEEK WHICH MIGHT HELP TO CUT RESCUE TIME IN HALF. EXPERT SKI INSTRUCTORS - THE MEN MOST QUALIFIED TO NEGOTIATE SNOW COVERED SLOPES - ARE LEARNING THE ART OF PARACHUTING SO THAT THEY CAN BE DROPPED FROM THE AIR CLOSE TO THE INJURE CLIMBER. THIS ELIMINATES THE LONG OUTWARD JOURNEY ACROSS MOUNTAIN PASSES AND SNOW-FILLED VALLEYS - AND BRINGS MEDICAL AND FOOD SUPPLIES TO THE UNFORTUNATE VICTIM MUCH MORE QUICKLY.

AMONG THE SKIERS TAKING PART IN THIS EXPERIMENT IS G.P. LEROUX - A FAMOUS HIMALAYAN GUIDE AND MOUNTAINEER. NO LESS CELEBRATED - IN HIS OWN FIELD - IS THE PILOT WHO IS FLYING THE SKIERS OUT FOR THEIR PARACHUTE JUMPS. HE IS M. GEIGER - FAMOUS FOR HIS ALPINE RESCUE FLIGHTS.

THE PARACHUTISTS JUMPED FROM 4,000 METRES (13,000 FEET). THEY FLOATED DOWN INTO THE MOUNTAINS - AND THEIR SKIS WERE PARACHUTED AFTER THEM.

THE COURSE WILL HELP TO MAKE THE ALREADY EXPERT SKIERS, EXPERT PARACHUTISTS - A COMBINATION OF TALENTS THAT COULD BE INVALUABLE IN SAVING LIVES IN THE ALPS...
