    Background: GRENOBLE, FRANCE

Although the Monte Carlo Rally was due to start on January 22, practice began two weeks before Christmas. But late snow upset the plans of many drivers. The men in theeeeee Rothmans Opel team saw their fist snow on the last day of practice and had to start planning their tactics again. First to run into snow on the alpine route of the rally near Grenoble, was Finnish driver Henri Toivonen, the son of 1966 winner, Pauli Toivonen. With him was former world-champion Ari Vatanen, also of Finland, and Guy Frequelin of France. Despite having last year's winning car, the trio tough competition. The firm favourite before the start of the race was Finland's Hannu Mikkola whose four-wheel drive Audi Quattro was reckoned to give him a strong advantage.
