    A 120-STRONG ARTILLERY BATTERY FROM THE NEW ZEALAND ARMY HAS ARRIVED FOR DUTY IN SOUTH VIETNAM.

    THEY ARRIVED BY HERCULES TRANSPORT AT THE BIEN HOA AIR BASE, 20 MILES (32 KMS) NORTH-EAST OF SAIGON ON THURSDAY. THE ADVANCE PARTY FLEW IN THE WEEK BEFORE.

    THEIR MAIN ROLE WILL BE TO "PROVIDE CLOSE SUPPORTING FIRE FOR INFANTRY." THEY ARE EQUIPPED WITH ITALIAN-BUILT 105-MILLIMETRE HOWITZERS, AND HAVE BEEN TRAINED IN JUNGLE-FIGHTING TECHNIQUES.

    NEW ZEALAND FOLLOWS ANOTHER COMMONWEALTH COUNTRY, AUSTRALIA, IN SENDING FORCES TO SOUTH VIETNAM AUSTRALIA ALREADY HAS A THOUSAND INFANTRYMEN IN ACTION AGAINST THE VIETCONG.
