    Maccabi Games - a Jewish sports festival - were opened at Copenhagen Stadium
    August 16 by Danish Prime Minister H.C. Hansen.

    Jewish Maccabi Games - an international event like the Olympic Games - are
    usually held in Israel. Last held in 1957, they are due against in 1961. The new
    European meeting will become a permanent event if it proves successful.

    The European Maccabiade is attended by 325 Jews from eleven countries including
    Scandinavia, Holland, Belgium, France, Great Britain, Switzerland, Finland and
    Israel, by 75 Jews from Denmark, and by a further 100 non-Jewish competitors
    from Denmark who take part 'hors concourse'.

    Events include athletics, football (Sweden, Denmark, England, France and
    Switzerland), tennis, water polo, table tennis, handball and swimming.
