    The second East and Central African Archives Conference has been held in Nairobi.
    As well as the host country, Kenya, four other countries were represented at the meeting - Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia and Malawi.
    The East and Central African Archives Conference is an offshoot of the International Council of Archives set up in 1948 with encouragement from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). The main aim of the Council was stated to be the preservation of the "archival heritage of mankind".
    Meeting at the National Archives Building in Kenya this week were delegates to the Second East and Central African Archives Conference. The conference brought together archivists from five African nations - Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia and Malawi. The two-day meeting was provided with a busy agenda - and an early point of discussion dealt with regional cooperation to promote the preservation of historical records. Other items on the agenda included a discussion on the role of Archives in African states - and the relationship of Archives with libraries and librarians. This conference of African Archivists is part of the International Council of Archives set up in 1948.
