  • Description

Flying in with United Nations personnel Sept 16, our cameraman filmed Manono, a large tin-producing Congo Republic town just south of Albertville, after drug-crazed tribesman ???lashed with Katanga gendarmes Sept 13 in 24-hours of savage fighting, followed by days of pillage and arson.

The jail was wrecked and prisoners released, administration offices were burned, and shops and houses were looted as the tribesmen overcame police resistance and went on the rampage. In the afternoon of Sept 14, 43 Katanga police and two Belgian officers marched into U.N. Headquarters in a local school, and laid down their arms, asking for protection from the company of 120 Irish troops stationed there.

Led by Chief Kayumba, the tribesmen, armed with bows and arrows, muzzle-loading guns, and captured automatic weapons, are still roaming the streets, but after days of nightmare the Irish troops have taken a firm grip on the situation. European men and women were gathered together at two points around the town, and are gradually being evacuated by air to Elisabethville.

Reports of tribal unrest continue to come in from various parts of the break-away Katanga Province.
