Background: A fiercely disputed goal ten minutes from the and gave England victory over Northern Ireland in today's (Saturday's) soccer international in Belfast. After the home side had applied almost continuous pressure, England broke quickly out of defence. Francis Lee seamed to handle the ball before putting Allan Clarke through to score. The Irish players protested, but the goal stood and they were unable to equalise.

SYNOPSIS: Northern Ireland kick-off in the second half of Saturday's international with England. There had been no score in the first half, but most of the attacks had come from the Irish side playing before their home crowd in Belfast.

Alan Ball sets up an England attack. But the few dangerous England moves foundered on the rock of Jennings in the Irish goal.

The England forwards are again denied by Jennings.

A corner to Northern Ireland. Despite a miserable record of not having beaten England on home soil for forty-four years, the Irish seized the initiative in the first half. George Best once had the ball in the net, but a typically opportunist goal was disallowed. And Gordon Banks in the England goal lived up to his reputation as the world's best goalkeeper with some splendid saves.

Ten minutes from time, tragedy for Northern Ireland. It followed after another period of Irish pressure.....England broke quickly out of defence. Francis Lee seemed to handle the ball before pushing the ball through to Allan Clarke to score. The Irish protested fiercely against the decision, but the Scottish referee refused to be moved. There was no further scoring and England ran out lucky winners.
