Background: India's opposition parties are making a concerted effort to provide a united front against the Congress (I) Party of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi for the country's forthcoming general election. On November 21, Maneka Gandhi, widow of Indira Gandhi's eldest son, Sanjay, filed her nomination papers in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh state for her candidacy in the Amethi constituency. She will be in direct competition with her brother in law, Rajiv, who filed his papers the previous day. After completing her nomination Maneka addressed a rally attended by an estimated 10,000 people in Sultanpur. She attacked the government on its record and blamed it for the assassination of Mrs Gandhi. She emphasised to the crowd that a vote for her would be a vote for Sanjay, who was widely accepted as his mother's first choice as her eventual successor before he was killed in a light aircraft crash in 1980. In New Delhi, on November 21, opposition leaders met to discuss their differences in an attempt to provide a united front to overturn the massive lead at present commanded by Congress (I) in the opinion polls. Former Prime Minister Charan Singh, now President of the Dalit Mazdoor Kisan Party (DMKP), held his won meeting before sending a representative to another gathering organised by former Kashmir Chief Minister. Doctor Farooq Abdullah. The meetings discussed seat allocations and the possibility of fielding joint opposition candidates in each constituency against Congress (I). They failed to decide o a procedure to allow this but are reported to be aware that only a united effort can prevent Rajiv Gandhi returning to power with a substantial majority.
