Background: Students and police clashed during demonstrations in many parts of seoul on Monday (11 October). One of the more serious protests took place outside Yonsei University--a leading private school in the southwestern part of the capital--where tear gas was used to break up attacks by rock-throwing students.

Monday's demonstrations were part of a series of clashes which began nearly two weeks ago when students protested against alleged corruption among officials.

SYNOPSIS: Students from Seoul's Yonsei University gathered in one of the South Korean capital's central areas on Monday (11 October) as another of a series of protests against alleged official corruption got underway. Demonstrations some of which have involved serious clashes with police, have been taking place in Seoul for over two weeks.

The police were ready with barricades as the demonstrators approached.

Yonsei University, which these students attend, is a leading private school in southwestern Seoul.

Rocks soon started flying and police responded shortly afterwards with teargas. The students were chanting slogans demanding the eradication of corruption. They also demanded the immediate resignation of the Defence Minister for the action of about 30 Army troops who broke into Korea University and arrested five student leaders last week. Police and students continued the exchange of stones and teargas. Demonstrations also took place in other parts of the capital as well.

Police vans hauled barricades away as the clash continued.

Police and students clashed during the day at many of the capital's colleges and university. On Tuesday (12 October) demonstrations continued. Nearly 1,000 students of Korea University, another major private institution, fought twice with teargas-firing riot police in two hour-long running street battles. Some 200 students of the National University's engineering college also clashed briefly with police. Arrests were made on a number of occasions. The two private universities and four colleges of seoul National University continued on Tuesday to be the scenes of a number of demonstrations and clashes. The incidents followed a week of sporadic demonstrations by small groups of students denouncing official corruption and social immorality.
