Background: ON THE EVE OF THIS YEAR'S UNITED STATES PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION BOTH VICE-PRESIDENT HUBERT HUMPHREY AND REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE RICHARD NIXON WERE CAMPAIGNING IN LOS ANGELES. THIRD PARTY CANDIDATE GEORGE WALLACE WAS IN HIS SOUTHERN STRONGHOLD OF ATLANTA.

MR. HUMPHREY AND HIS RUNNING-MATE SENATOR EDWARD MUSKIE DROVE THROUGH LOS ANGELES YESTERDAY (MONDAY) ON THE MOST SUCCESSFUL TICKER-TAPE PARADE OF THEIR CAMPAIGN, IN AN ATTEMPT TO CARRY OFF CALIFORNIA'S FORTY ELECTORAL VOTES. RICHARD NIXON WAS ALSO IN LOS ANGELES ON MONDAY, VISITING HIS CAMPAIGNING HEADQUARTERS, SHOWING GREAT CONFIDENCE, ALTHOUGH THE LATEST OPINION POLLS SUGGEST THAT THE ELECTION WILL BE A CLOSE-RUN THING. SPEAKING TO REPORTERS MR. NIXON SAID:
MR. GEORGE WALLACE HELD A FINAL RALLY IN ATLANTA - ABOUT 6,000 PEOPLE TURNED UP, INCLUDING NIXON AND HUMPHREY SUPPORTERS. IN HIS SPEECH HE SAID THAT NEITHER THE REPUBLICANS NOR THE DEMOCRATS HAD TREATED THE SOUTH DECENTLY AND HE URGED THE CROWD TO VOTE FOR "ONE OF THEIR OWN" THIS TIME.
