  • Description

THE 296 CREWS WHO SET OUT FROM EIGHT EUROPEAN CITIES TODAY (SATURDAY) ON THE MONTE CARLO RALLY HAVE FACED SOME OF THE WORST CONDITIONS IN THE LONG HISTORY OF THE EVENT.DRIVERS ARRIVING AT CHECKPOINTS TOLD OF SIBERIAN WEATHER ON MOST OF THE ROUTES OF THE 2,500 MILE (4,000 KILOMETRES) EVENT.

EXPERTS FORECAST THAT THIS YEAR'S RALLY WOULD BE THE MOST DANGEROUS SINCE 1958 WHEN ONLY A FIFTH OF THE STARTERS REACHED THE FINISHING LINE WITHIN THE TIME LIMIT.AND FIRST REPORTS, OF CRASHES AND RETIREMENTS AS THE DRIVERS BATTLED WITH ICE-BOUND AND SNOW-BLOCKED ROADS, SUPPORTED THE FORECASTERS.

JOINT FAVOURITES FOR AN OUTRIGHT WIN THIS YEAR BOTH CHOOSE THE STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN, STARTING POINT.THEY WERE ERIK CARLSSON IN HIS TINY 841 C.C.SAAB AND EUGEN BOHRINGER OF WEST GERMANY IN A MERCEDES.SWEDEN'S CARLSSON WON THE MONTE CARLO RALLY LAST YEAR AND HAS WON THE BRITISH ROYAL AUTOMOBILE CLUB RALLY FOR THE PAST THREE YEARS.BOHRINGER, RUNNER-UP TO CARLSSON IN LAST YEAR'S MONTE CARLO RALLY, IS THE EUROPEAN RALLY CHAMPION FOR 1962.

THE BIGGEST NUMBER OF COMPETITORS - 75 - LEFT THE STOCKHOLM STARTING POINT.THIS YEAR, BRITAIN AGAIN HAD MOST ENTRIES - 107 - FOLLOWED BY 77 FROM FRANCE AND 28 FROM GERMANY.
