  • Description

A SOVIET-DESIGNED MIG JET CRASHED ON WEDNESDAY INTO LAKE STOESSENSEE, IN WEST BERLIN A FEW MILES (KILOMETRES) FROM THE EAST GERMAN BORDER AND CLOSE TO A BRITISH MILITARY HEADQUARTERS. LATER BRITISH TROOPS BARRED A THREE-STAR RUSSIAN GENERAL AND ARMED SOVIET SOLDIERS FROM APPROACHING THE LAKE.

THE PLANE HAS BEEN FLYING IN FORMATION WITH TWO OTHER AIRCRAFT. POLICE SAID THE AIRCRAFT EXPLODED IN A BALL OF FIRE AS IT SPIRALLED DOWNWARDS. THEY SAID THE PILOT MIGHT HAVE TRIED TO AVOID CRASHING IN INTO A POPULATED AREA AFTER LOSING ALTITUDE. A HUGE APARTMENT BUILDING HOUSING TWO-THOUSAND PEOPLE STANDS NOT FAR AWAY.

RESCUE CREWS MANAGED TO LIFT PART OF THE PLANE ABOVE THE WATER AND FOUND THE CABIN WAS EMPTY. FIREMEN SAID IT WAS POSSIBLE THE PILOT COULD HAVE BAILED OUT OVER EAST GERMAN TERRITORY. AS BRITISH MILITARY POLICE AND GERMAN POLICE MOUNTED THE RESCUE OPERATION, RUSSIAN OFFICERS IN CARS FOLLOWED BY BUSLOAD OF ABOUT 20 ARMED TROOPS ARRIVED AT THE LAKESIDE. MILITARY POLICE PREVENTED THE SOLDIERS FROM LEAVING THE BUS.
