  • Description

A good way to keep your population fit was to be seen in sport-conscious Singapore, Malaya, Feb 28, when 3,500 men, women and children took place on the annual "Big Walk" across the island. Winner in the women section, in which only 160 competed, was tell Norwegian secretary, Mrs. Hazel Toona, who romped the 14 1/2 mile course in 2 hours, 44 minutes. Four minutes behind her was nineteen your old Malayan, Miss-Malmuna.

European Lawyers, Chinese Journalists, servicemen, road-sweepers and people from all walks of life pledged along hot streets as opportune advertisers stood along the route handing out free samples of cosmetics, footwear, ointments and refreshments to the contestants. Over two hundred policemen were on hand to keep order.

Of the 3,500 starters about 2,500 finished - some with only socks on their feet, - there was only one stretcher case. The first nineteen of each group received a challenge cup, and every other brave competitor received a certificate.
