TRANSCRIPT: CAMERON: "A message has just come through to say that Gouge Whitlam and Bob Hawke, that Brisbane is seeing the biggest rally that Queens Road has ever seen. All over Australia the working people are united .. united as they've never been before .. standing shoulder to shoulder fighting for the rights of Parliamentary government. And I'm proud to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Gouge Whitlam in this great of his."



REPORTER: "You mentioned there a sense of outrage. Some of you own ministers have been concerned about the possibility of violence in the streets because of the anger that has been generated b;y the situation. Do you think this is a real possibility in Australia?"



WHITLAM: "Of course it's a possibility, because this has been a coup d'etat ... putsch. But I hope that people will retain their discipline and make their determination felt. At the ballot box in Australia. There's no denying that the faith of a very great number of people in the parliamentary system in Australia has been grievously shaken. But I think democracy deserves one more trial in Australia."

Background: About twenty thousand people turned out to a rally in Melbourne, Australia, on Friday (14 November) to demand the return of their deposed Labour government. Prime Minister Gouge Whitlam and his government were sacked on Tuesday (11 November) by the Governor-General, Sir John Kerr.

The rally was one of many in major cities and was addressed by the former Minister of Labour and Immigration in Whitlam's Government, Mr. Clyde Cameron.

He told the crowd that Australians throughout the country are united as they have never been before...standing shoulder to shoulder, fighting for the rights of parliamentary government.

The demonstration was noisy with continuous chanting of "We Want Gouge" but the politicians have called for peaceful demonstrations, and, so far, police have reporter few incidents.

The number and size of the pro-Whitlam rallies have illustrated the unrest evident in Australia as the new coalition Liberal and Country Party Government, led by the former Opposition leader, Mr. Malcolm Fraser, takes office.

In Canberra, earlier on Friday, Mr. Whitlam spoke about the manner of his sudden dismissal from office .. and his firm belief that the policies of his Labour Party would be vindicated in December's general elections. Democracy, he said, would triumph at the ballot box.
