  • Description

The Commonwealth Prime Ministers' Conference ended in Ottawa on Friday (10 August) with broad agreement on the Rhodesia issue. Commonwealth leaders expressed concern for the situation in Rhodesia and the continuing absence of a settlement. They also aligned themselves with British initiatives toward a solution, based on majority rule.

However, a plan for a "peace force" in Rhodesia was vetoed by Britain. It was put forward by Barbados, and supported during the conference by Canada, and the African and Caribbean nations.

The general view after the nine-day conference was that it had succeeded, despite the pressures of the emotional Rhodesia question. As host Prime Minister, Pierre Trudeau, put it: "Never before has there been this unaniminity ... on that subject."
