INTRODUCTION: Ivory Coast President Felix Houphouet-Boigny met French President Valery Giscard D'Estaing in Paris on Wednesday (23 February) for discussions on ways of achieving a permanent peace in the Middle-East.

SYNOPSIS: President Houphouet-Boigny has recently played a mediator's role in the Arab-Israeli conflict. Last month in Geneva, the Ivory Coast leader held separate talks with Israeli Premier Yitzhak Rabin and representatives of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO).

The French have also played a role in trying to re-convene the Geneva Middle East peace conference and Wednesday's meeting at the Elysee Palace dealt with the progress each country has made. President Houphouet-Boigny said he saw his role as a "simple communicator" taking information from both sides.

After his meeting with President giscard, he told reporters that he felt peace was on the way, but that the "road is still very long and strewn with obstacles."
