Background: SOUTH AFRICA'S NEW COINS WILL BE INTRODUCED ON TUESDAY (MAY 11). THE FIRST TO GO INTO CIRCULATION WILL BE BRONZE TWO CENTS AND NICKEL FIVE CENTS.

AFTERWARDS, OTHER DENOMINATIONS WILL BE ISSUED -- 10, 20 AND 50 CENT PIECES IN NICKEL; AND HALF CENT AND ONE CENT PIECES IN BRONZE.

AMONG THE COINS TO BE WITHDRAWN FROM CIRCULATION WILL BE THE OLD FIVE CENT OR SIXPENNY PIECE OF SILVER AND THE TEN CENTS OR SHILLING PIECE.

THE NEW AND OLD COINS ARE NEARLY OF THE SAME SIZE BUT ARE OF DIFFERENT FACE VALUE. THE CHANGEOVER ENTAILS CHANGING ALL SLOT MACHINES TOO -- LIKE JUKE BOXES, PARKING METERS, SCALES ... AND SCENT SQUIRTERS IN THE LADIES' POWDER ROOM.

A SONG IN ENGLISH AND AFRIKAANS IS BEING PLAYED OVER THE RADIO AND IN SCHOOLS TO PUBLICISE THE NEW MONEY AND THERE ARE SPECIAL LESSONS IN THE CLASSROOM TO ACQUAINT THE PUPILS WITH THE COINS.

THE PORTRAIT OF THE LEADING DUTCH SETTLER OF THE CAPE OF THE MID 17TH CENTURY, JAN VAN RIEBEECK APPEARS ON ONE SIDE OF ALL THE NEW COINS. THE OTHER SIDE HAS VARIOUS DESIGNS -- AMONG THEM A LEAPING SPRINGBOK, THE FLOWERS OF THE NATIONAL FLAG, AND A BLUE CRANE.

THE NEW TWO CENTS IS UNLIKE ANY OTHER COIN ISSUED. AND IT IS DISTINCTIVE FOR ITS DESIGN OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN BLACK WILDEBEEST. LIKE THE AMERICAN BISON IT WAS ONCE NUMEROUS. THERE WERE LARGE HERDS OF THEM WHEN THE VOORTREKKERS MOVED INLAND AND NORTHWARDS FROM THE CAPE. NOWADAYS, THE BLACK WILDEBEEST IS SEEN ONLY IN A FEW GAME RESERVES.

PAMPHLETS, CARTOONS AND POSTERS IN THEIR MILLIONS ARE BEING DISTRIBUTED ALL OVER THE COUNTRY AS WELL AS IN SOUTH WEST AFRICA WHICH ALSO TAKES THE NEW COINAGE.

IN THE REPUBLIC, AFRICANS WILL BE ABLE TO READ ABOUT THE COINS IN ENGLISH, AFRIKAANS, ZULU, XHOSA, VENDA, TSWANA, NORTH AND SOUTH SOTHO AND TSONGA.

IN SOUTH WEST AFRICA, THE DETAILS OF THE COINAGE WILL BE AGAIN IN THE TWO MAIN LANGUAGES, AND IN GERMAN, MOTJIHERERO, OVAMBO, NAMA, MBUCK SHU, KWANGALI AND NDONGA.
