    THE FUNERAL OF THE THREE LONDON POLICEMEN WHO WERE NOT NEAR WORMWOOD SCRUBS PRISON ON AUGUST 12 WAS TODAY (THURSDAY) HELD AT ST. STEPHEN'S CHURCH, SHEPHERD'S BUSH, IN WEST LONDON.

    EIGHTEEN MEN FROM THE SHEPERD'S BUSH STATION ACTED AS PALL-BEARERS FOR THEIR DEAD COLLEAGUES. WREATHS HAD BEN ARRIVING AT THE POLICE STATION IN SHEPERD'S BUSH FROM ALL OVER BRITAIN.

    THE SHOOTINGS, WHICH TOOK PLACE WHILE THE THREE MEN WERE ON A ROUTINE PATROL IN AN UNMARKED POLICE CAR, SHOCKED THE NATION. IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE TRAGEDY REPRESENTATIONS WERE MADE TO THE HOME SECRETARY, MR. ROY JENKINS, TO CONSIDER BRINGING BACK THE DEATH PENALTY FOR THE MURDER OF POLICEMEN.

    TWO MEN HAVE BEEN ARRESTED IN CONNECTION WITH THE SHOOTINGS, AND A NATION -- WIDE MANHUNT IS STILL IN PROGRESS FOR A THIRD MAN WANTED FOR QUESTIONING.

    THE FUNERAL WAS ATTENDED BY SIR JOSEPH SIMPSON, METROPOLITAN POLICE COMMISSIONER, AND OTHER SENIOR POLICE OFFICERS, LARGE CROWDS BLOCKED THE ROADS OUTSIDE THE CHURCH AND TRAFFIC WAS TEMPORARILY DIVERTED AS THE THREE COFFINS LEFT IN PROCESSION.

    THE LAST SERVICE FOR DETECTIVE SERGEANT CHRISTOPHER HEAD, TEMPORARY DETECTIVE CONSTABLE DAVID WOMBSHELL AND POLICE CONSTABLE GEOFFREY FOX WAS CONDUCTED BY THE RIGHT REVEREND RONALD GOODCHILD, SUFFRAGAN BISHOP OF KENSINGTON.
