The U.N. Security Council, in emergency session, Monday (6 September) called on India and Pakistan?
The U.N. Security Council, in emergency session, Monday (6 September) called on India and Pakistan to stop hostilities immediately and withdraw their forces in Kashmir and elsewhere to the positions held on 5 August. The council also requested U Thant, the U.N. Secretary General, to "exert every possible effort" to implement the resolution.
The resolution, sponsored by the six non-permanent members of the Council was similar to one previously passed.
In response, Thant said he would go to India and Pakistan as soon as possible in an attempt to bring about the cease fire in the escalating fighting between the two members of the British Commonwealth.
It was believed he would leave late Tuesday or early Wednesday.
