    Amid increasing nationwide concern at his treatment of the related international problems of Kashmir and the repatriation of Pakistani troops form Bangladesh, President Bhutto turned on Friday (31st March) to more immediate domestic affairs, and addressed a rally in his own home province of Sind.

    The vast southwestern province is rapidly becoming Pakistan's latest trouble spot. Sectarian violence has accompanied demonstrations against the proposed settlement of Biharis from Bangladesh, while the slogan "Sind Desh" -- in imitation of the East Bengali secessionists -- has been heard at student protests.

    Other Sindhi nationalist demonstrations have included the burning of newspapers printed in Urdu, Pakistan's principal language. President Bhutto's speech was given mainly in Sindhi.

    SYNOPSIS: President Bhutto last week took time off from the larger international issues facing Pakistan, in order to speak to the people of his own home province of Sind. He spoke to them of the recent troubles that have recently threatened to turn the large southwestern province into Pakistan's latest trouble spot.

    Speaking in Sindhi, he reassured the fifteen-thousand strong crowd that Biharis repatriated form Bangladesh and due to be resettled in Sind would not harm conditions in the province.

    But the deplored recent demonstrations calling for an independent Sindhi state, during which the slogan "Sind Desh" was shouted in imitation of the secessionist East Bengal province. Sindhi nationalists have also burnt newspapers printed in the main Pakistani language of Urdu.
