SYNOPSIS: President Sadat flew back to Cairo on Saturday (9 April) to a welcome led by Vice-President Hosni Mubarek. His visit to the United States was the first by an Arab head of state since President Carter took power in January. One of the important achievements in Washington was the establishment of a good working relationship between the two men. president Sadat is leading the Arab initiative towards the peace talks, while the United States remains Israel's major ally. President Sadat's visit followed one by Israeli Premier Yitzhak Rabin.

As a result of the visit, a U.S. working group headed by Secretary of State Cyrus Vance is being set up to contact all parties involved, including the Soviet union. The group will try to narrow the remaining differences, and will visit the Middle East.
