  • Description

One of the major successes for the Greek Cypriot National Guard during the fighting following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus was scored at Limassol on the southern coast of the island. Fighting broke out there soon after the first Turkish troops landed on Saturday morning (20 July). During the six hour battle which followed, 20 residents of the Turkish quarter were killed and scores injured. Damage in the quarter was very heavy.

After the Turkish community surrendered the Greek Cypriots rounded up an estimated two thousand men and herded them to a stadium in the centre of the town.

The Greek Cypriots have complete control of the town.

The United Nations force on the island arranged to transport women and children from the area in case of more fighting. Many of the women asked to be allowed to go to the football stadium to be with their husbands.
