The United States Aircraft carrier "Coral Sea" is steaming toward its home port in the U.S. It completed its last battle mission in the Viet Nam war--at least for this year--on Wednesday (1 February). For the last six months the Coral Sea was stationed in the Gulf of Tonkin. Its fighter-bombers were responsible for attacking targets in North Viet Nam.
This film shows the take off and return to the last mission.
Twenty five planes were sent to destroy a North Vietnamese railroad yard--only five minutes away from the carrier.
Some of the pilots who went on this mission had flown more than 200 missions--and were looking forward to their return home.
It took 30 minutes to complete the mission, which the flight commander called "successful."
All the planes that took part in the action returned safely.
