  • Description

Blonde Australian Belinda Roma Green, a photographic model from Melbourne, won the Miss World crown in London on Friday night (1 December). Norway's Ingeborg Sorensen was second and Tel Aviv student Chana Ordan was third.

Sydney born Miss Green declared after she was crowned that she had never dreamed of winning the 3,000 sterling first prize. She said that following her year as Miss World -- which carries a contract worth 10,000 sterling -- she would go back to her job in Melbourne as a model.

The 20-year-old Miss World said she left a boy friend in Melbourne, who did not want her to win the contest because it takes her on a year-long whirlwind tour of the world on modelling assignment.

Miss Sweden, whom book-makers had strongly tipped to win the title did not survive the first round. Miss United Kingdom, though strongly supported by the home audience, came sixth behind Miss India fifth, and Miss Austria, fourth.

The event, held at London's Royal Albert Hall, ran smoothly, despite threats of demonstrations by supporters of the Women's Liberation movement. They regard the contest as a "cattle market".
