  • Description

Police and three fleeing bank robbers armed with a sub-machine gun exchanged fire in the streets of Milan, Italy, yesterday (Monday) and the tally was - three bystanders killed and 21 other people, including six policemen, wounded. The gunmen, one of them wounded, got away but the wounded man was captured after he had been abandoned by the other two.

The robbers, who got away with 10,000,000 Lire (about GBP6,000 Sterling), opened up wildly with sub-machine gun fire as police patrol cars gave chase. The police fired back and injured one of the bandits, who was thrown from the escape car together with the stolen money. Two innocent bystanders, including a truck driver shot at the wheel of his vehicle, were killed outright. The third died today in hospital.

A Bank of Milan casher said the bandits waited in a queue with other clients, then covered their faces with handkerchiefs, produced guns and demanded money. After stunning a client and a police guard with the handles of their guns, they fled in their waiting car and opened fire when a police patrol car blocked their escape. The 21 wounded bystanders included a five year old boy.

Pools of blood and dozens of smashed and bullet-riddled cars marked the gang's gateway dash. The gateway car was later found abandoned.
